Special Education Family Engagement

    Thurs., September 14 - SEAC

    • 6-8 pm at the Administration Building, 360 Colborne St., Saint Paul, 55102

    Tues., September 26 - Field Trip to Groves Academy LD/ADHD College and Post-Secondary Opportunities Fair

    •  College fair for students with learning disabilites, such as dyslexia, attention disorders and other learning differences
    •  Before the fair at Focus Beyond, SPPS Counselor, Jessie Hass, will be offering a Q & A with tips for families to make th most of the fair. Box dinners   will be provided. A bus will take families to the fair or families may drive themselves.

    Sat., October 21 - Hmong Mental Health Fair

    • 9- 4 pm Washington Technology Magnet
    • Hmong mental health leaders, health care professionals and educators present a panel discussion and breakout sessions in Hmong

    Special Education Family Groups

    Families with children in Special Education are invited to attend any or all Special Education Family Groups. Special Education Family Groups topics change monthly and are a chance for families to share experiences, gain resources and build community. Special Education Family Groups are held monthly at 360 Colborne St- Bridge View School from 5:30-7:30 pm. A pizza dinner is served from 5:30-6:00 pm. Childcare and interpretation are available upon request if needed to attend. For additional information click here.

    Somali Taageer

    SPPS Somali familes with children in  special education are invited to attend Somali Taageer.  SPPS and Arc Greater Twin Cities partner to offer families this support group with the intention to empower parents and provide information on resources. The Somali Taageer Group will help the community talk about:

    • Navigating the school system
    • Breaking down the cultural barriers and stigma about disability
    • Helping parents help each other
    • Providing emotional support through educational programs

     Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) Meetings

    SEAC meetings are held monthly and are an opportunity for families of children in Special Education to engage with other parents, staff and interested community members. SEAC members provide input on special education issues to the Interim Director of the Office of Specialized Services.  Attending meetings are a way to become more knowledgable about Special Education, develop relationships with Special Education staff and network with other families. Parents are encouraged to attend any time as a guest or to become a SEAC member. For additional infomation click here.
