Mr. Shepperd has been teaching at Como Elementary since 2016 but he has been teaching for students with special needs for over 30 years. He studied East Asian Studies at the University of Minnesota and Akita University in Japan. He went to the University of Minnesota for his Principal's license at the University of Minnesota and has a Masters in Special Education from the University of St. Thomas. He has taught every grade and age from 5 to 21.
Mr. Shepperd grew up in Saint Paul's east side and attended public schools in St. Paul. When he is not teaching Mr. Shepperd enjoys time with the family, gardening, and many different outdoor activities.
In the classroom math and literacy are a big part of the instructional day but also social skills, daily living skills, and of course having fun. Since 2017 the students in his room run Cardinal Coffee, the weekly school coffee shop and once back into the building full time the hope is to start it up again. The goal is not to make money but to gain experience in pre-work skills. Specifically students are learning proper hygiene, financial management, and social work skills among other other things. This is an exciting endeavor for the students and the coffee shop has even been featured on WCCO news. His class has also utilized the school's therapy pool where students learn dressing and hygiene skills, water safety, and basic swimming when appropriate. We will see if that is a possibility in the future.
