Degrees and Certifications:
My name is Ms. Stedje-Olsen, and I teach sixth-grade English Language Arts (ELA) at Murray Middle School. I've working for Saint Paul Public Schools since 2012. My students are the reason I teach. They inspire me every day! Middle school is my jam, and I love the energy and creativity the students bring to school. I also love the workshop model curriculum our district embraces. During ELA class, students learn and apply strategies that become part of a toolbox of necessary skills, strategies, and inquiry work needed to thrive in high school and beyond. We expose students to a multitude of texts and assist students in finding a genre or author they are passionate about reading. My goal is to help inspire and guide students in becoming lifelong readers and strong writers.
Outside of the classroom, I love spending time with my three teenagers. We enjoy island camping at Lake Kabetogama with our yellow labrador retriever, hiking as we forage for wild mushrooms, and listening to live music on the patio in the summer. (We hibernate during the winter months.) When I have time to myself, I enjoy running, boxing, reading, or cooking.
I look forward to getting to know you and your family. Please contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns at firstname.lastname@example.org.

This year we will be engaging in a Reader's Workshop and a Writer's Workshop in the same classroom. I feel so lucky to have students for both Reader's and Writer's this year! On most days, each workshop includes a mini-lesson, student work time (indepent, partners, or groups), strategic small group instruction, and a closing reflection. During the minilesson, students are learning about a reading or writing strategy or analyzing an anchor text.
A word about technology...
I believe technology is crucial for engaging today's youth. Our lessons integrate technology on a daily basis, so make sure to bring your fully-charged iPad every day. Technology will be used to augment and supplement the lessons and activities. If your student forgets to bring his or her iPad, they may be partnered with another student or provided with a similar version of the learning task. Murray is a NO Cell Phone Zone school, so please make sure personal cell phones stay locked in lockers or are not brought to school. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
