Degrees and Certifications:
Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre from the South Carolina School of the Arts
Hello Crossroads Famlies!
My name is Abigail Covert, but the staff and students know me better as Miss Abby. This is my first year teaching and my first year with SPPS. Some of you may know that Crossroads has not had a full-time music program for the last few years. I'm honored to be your new PreK-5th music specialist and to fill the halls with melodies and rhythms once again!
I'm a recent graduate of the South Carolina School of the Arts at Anderson University where I received my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre. Though I called the Carolinas home for those college years, I'm proud to have been born and raised here in the Twin Cities. I owe my love and appreciation of music and theatre to the incredible educators I had during my K-12 years in the Roseville district. I only hope I can have the same positive influence on the students at Crossroads!
When I'm not at school working , I spend my time with family and friends, traveling, and auditioning for / performing in various acting projects in theatre and film. I'm a big fan of all things Marvel + Disney and love geeking out about it with my students! They know that I could go on for hours about Spider-man, Frozen, and more. It's important for me to relate to the students and learn what they like to watch / listen to / do outside of school, so that I can cater the curriculum to the things that they enjoy.
My focus for the 2021-22 school year is to bring the students back to basics with rhythm and general music appreciation. In curriculum courses, students in grades 1-5 have been exploring rhythm and dynamics using drums and rhythm sticks. PreK-Kindergarten students have been applying principals of listening and observation to discover where we can find music and sounds in our everyday lives.
In our enrichment courses, PreK-3rd grade students have been exploring songs and elements of Disney music through movies like Encanto, The Lion King, etc. and composers like Alan Menken, Lin Manuel Miranda, and more. Grades 4-5 have learned about various musical artists through history and their impact on music as we know it. Some favorite artists so far have included Michael Jackson, Selena Quintanilla, Olivia Rodrigo, and BTS.
Though teaching music in the midst of a pandemic has presented its own challenges, we have been creative in finding ways to learn and produce music safely. I'm proud of every student for their willingness to try new things and the growth they've shown so far!
I love connecting with students and families in any way that I can. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
