Degrees and Certifications:
Welcome to Pre- Kindergarten!
I am thrilled to teach here at Riverview Elementary School! The teachers in the classroom are myself, Meera Patel, Samantha Schwab (TA) and Sonja Ihlenfeldt (MN Reading Core). We have a morning and afternoon class which each last 2 and 1/2 hours. We will be working through the Discovering Our World Curriculum. This is a year round curriculum which covers all the areas of development (social, emotional, etc) and academic needs for children to prepare them for kindergarten. The English Pre- K Program works on academic concepts through songs, acting out, art, stories and building with play materials. We work on mathematics, literacy and reading skills through play based learning.
This year students will be working around themes such as "Being Healthy in our World," "First six weeks of school" and "Change in our World," to name a few. Each of these themes last 4-6 weeks and we work on vocabulary, phonics, alliteration, name writing throughout different activities. We will be doing many parent engagement activities because I believe parent involvement is crucial for every child's success. We will be going on field trips this May to the Farm at Dodge Nature Center!
There are two sections of 20 children each: a morning class from 8:30 to 11:00 am, and an afternoon class from 12:30 to 3:00pm.
A School Day
Ease into the day: This consists of greeting the children as they arrive, teaching independent self-help skills of taking off coats, and hanging up backpacks, writing their names, and listening to stories.
Movement: This is large motor skill development outside at the playground when the weather is nice or indoors through music when the weather is bad.
Learning Circle: They sing songs, participate in learning activities and listen to the story of the week.
Small Groups: Depending on their learning needs children are divided into groups of 5-6 and practice pre reading and math skills.
Active Learning: The children have extended time to explore the different learning centers while teachers enter into their play to help them learn important vocabulary, concepts and skills.
Regroup to revisit: We review lessons taught from the day.
Our children build on life long learning, friendship and school readiness skills that they need to be successful for kindergarten and upcoming school years. This is my sixth year teaching and I am thrilled to be working with such a great community of learners!
If you would like to come for a school visit please feel free to spend the day.
Have a wonderful school year.
