Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Melanie Traxler
Welcome to 3rd Grade!
My name is Melanie Traxler and I’m very excited to be your child’s third grade teacher! Third grade is a time of big academic and social growth.
This is my 6th year at Horace Mann and my 15th year of teaching elementary school. Prior to teaching at Horace Mann I was the Science Specialist at Randolph Heights and I also taught 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades in Urbana, Illinois. My educational background is as diverse as my teaching and learning interests. I earned a B.S. in Biology from University of Illinois, an M.S. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from University of Nebraska, and then an M.Ed. in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois. I’m an enthusiastic learner myself and one of my favorite parts of my job is helping to spark students’ curiosity and passion for learning.
I moved to Minnesota from Illinois in 2009. I live in St. Louis Park with my husband, my stepson and our dog. We love exploring national parks and so far we have been on adventures to Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Teton, Badlands, Olympic, Sequoia, Yosemite and Redwood together. We were absolutely in awe and humbled by the majestic beauty and towering presence of the sequoia and redwood trees we saw in California this summer. This magnificent sequoia we are standing by, in addition to being massive, is 2,200 years old!
This will be a great year of learning, growth, fun and community with all of the students in our class. There are many new concepts to learn and master in third grade, including basic multiplication and division, and decimals in math. Students also learn how to evaluate the usefulness of resources when learning to do research in their writing units. And students learn about the three branches of government and how to be responsible citizens in social studies. I look forward to getting to know all of our families better and collaborating with you on all of your children's academic and social growth!
