I earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from the Pennsylvania State University. While at Penn State I was on the fencing team and we won four National Championships. I earned my Master of Science degree from Bemidji State University. This is my 21st year teaching in St. Paul. I live in White Bear Lake with my husband Bob, who is a 4th grade teacher at Battle Creek Magnet in St. Paul, our 101 ½ year old son Owen will be in sixth grade at Highland Park Middle School this, our 10½ year old daughter Sydni, will be in fifthgrade at HPE and our 2.5 year old chiuahaua, Tuzi. I enjoy reading, shopping, baking, training for races, and spending time with my family. I'm looking forward to a fun and rewarding year!
Blat's Bulletin Newsletters
Learning goals, homework and thoughts from our day is e-mailed home daily in Blat's Bulletin. Information regarding events and reminders will be in our monthly newsletter, which is emailed to you. I will also use email to send out updates and important announcements as needed, so please make sure I have a working email address for you.
Planners and Discipline Plan
Planners and Class Dojo are used daily in my classroom. They are a way for us to communicate with each other and it helps to provide structure and organizational skills for my students. On Mondays we’ll write the spelling words for the week in the planner. I will also try to email the words out to you. Each day the student will write their homework in their planner. Please check the planner daily for homework and announcements. The planner also helps document behaviors that occur at school. I ask all of my students to treat each other with respect. I reward good behavior and provide consequences for poor behavior. If your learner has something concerning behavior written in his or her planner please note that they had at least 2 warnings prior to writing in their planner. Each day everyone starts on green. If their behavior does not follow our essential agreement they will be given a verbal reminder. If another behavior occurs they will change their card to yellow and take a break at their desk to think about how they can change their behavior to follow our essential agreement. If the behavior continues the learner will change their card to red and write what they were doing in their planner and may lose recess or choice time. If a student moves to blue they will write in their planner again and may take a break in another room. If your learner stays on green the entire day they will have a “stamp” in their planner to signify that they had a great day. After 10 stamps they can look in the prize bin and get a prize. Check your learner’s planner every day for homework and please sign the planner over the weekend so I know that you’ve seen the planner.
Class Dojo is an app that also helps track student behavior. You will receive an information sheet with log-on information. This app tracks appropriate and inappropriate school behavior in real time. You can also message me from the app.
Second graders have about 30 minutes of homework daily. HPE is supplementing with Math Expressions this year. You will see more repetition of concepts and more practicing of concepts. Look for two pages of math homework each night. One page is a direct review/practice of what we learning that day in class and the other page is a review of skills. A good idea is to set aside a certain time that is spent each day on homework. Your learner should be able to complete the homework without help. Homework reinforces what we learn during the school day. Your learner should also read a book at their level for 20-30 minutes a day, including weekends. Please let me know if you are having any problems with the homework.
All students need shoes for gym. Please make sure that your learner has their gym shoes with them on gym days or they will be unable to participate in gym class. Our preps rotate two days for each prep; 10 days Chinese, 10 days Art, and 10 days Gym. We also have computer and library one day a week.
If your learner would like a snack at read aloud time, please send a healthy snack for them such as fruit, crackers, juice, or pretzels. No chips or cookies please. If you choose to send birthday treats we do birthday treats at snack time. If you learner has a summer birthday, feel free to send treats on their half birthday. I give each student a birthday treat as well.
