Ms. Misukanis

Ms. Misukanis has been an elementary and middle school teacher since 2011. She began her teaching career teaching middle school teaching Religion and Math to 6-8.  She then went on to teach 5th-8th grade.  She taught a range of subjects from art to Spanish and math.  She began teaching in Saint Paul Public Schools since 2014. She has taught 5th grade at Dayton's Bluff.  She graduated from Saint Catherine University with a degree in Elementary Education and focus in Middle School Mathematics.  

When not at school, Ms. Misukanis enjoys spending time with her family and friends.  She enjoys going for walks, yoga and reading.  

Ms. Misukanis grew up in Minnesota and has been here her whole life! She currently lives in Saint Paul! 

Ms. Misukanis enjoys teaching at Dayton's Bluff and working with the students from the community. 

 

 

Literacy Corner

  • In fifth grade, we work on mastering a variety of skills in our reading lessons. Below you will find each of the standards we incorporate into our mini lessons with the whole group as well as standards we focus on in our small guided reading groups. 

    Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

    Determine a theme of a story, drama, or poem from details in the text, including how characters in a story or drama respond to challenges or how the speaker in a poem reflects upon a topic; summarize the text.

    Compare and contrast two or more characters, settings, or events in a story or drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., how characters interact).

    Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative language such as metaphors and similes.

    Explain how a series of chapters, scenes, or stanzas fits together to provide the overall structure of a particular story, drama, or poem.

    Describe how a narrator’ s or speaker’ s point of view influences how events are described.

    Analyze how visual and multimedia elements contribute to the meaning, tone, or beauty of a text (e.g., graphic novel, multimedia presentation of fiction, folktale, myth, poem).

    Compare and contrast stories in the same genre (e.g., mysteries and adventure stories) on their approaches to similar themes and topics.

    By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature and other texts including stories, dramas, and poetry at the high end of the grades 4–5 text complexity band proficiently and independently. Self -select texts for personal enjoyment, interest, and academic tasks.

    In writing this year, students will explore writing on a variety of topics. Students will create polished drafts of a personal narrative, an interpretive essay, research essay, biography Keynote presentation, opinion based essay, memoir, and a poetry unit. Students will explore and participate in all parts of the writing process from brainstorming, to proofreading thier rough drafts and adding detail and transitions to writing thier final drafts. 

Math Corner

  • In fifth grade, students work on mastering a vareity of mathematical concepts.  Students will explore finding the mean, median and range of different sets of data.  They also look at fractions and decimals, reading and creating graphs from various data, finding the volume and area of both 2D and 3D shapes, and reading and solving real world story problems. 

    Students will also have IXL accounts set up for them which we will use to practice skills in the classroom.  Students can login at home and use it to practice!
