Portfolio Assessment Overview

    Specific details about this school year's process was shared via elementary schools in December 2020 and January 2021.

    TDAS accepts and reviews portfolio submissions for students currently attending an SPPS school and for students who reside in the city of Saint Paul but do not currently attend an SPPS school.

    The portfolio is a multi-dimensional, collaborative assessment process that provides an overview of the student's gifts, talents, potential, and areas of strength. See details for explainations of the pieces of the portfolio and question samples.

    Portfolio submissions may include: scaled responses, recommendations, work samples, and assessment scores from multiple perspectives.  Responses collected may come from parents, school staff/teachers, and community members who can speak to a child’s strengths and abilities.

     

    The portfolio submission window for the 2020-2021 school year closed January 29, 2021. Portfolio assessment data is reviewed February 1-12, 2021. Families should expect to receive their child's results via US postal mail beginning around mid-February. 

     

    Each school year, submissions are accepted during the portfolio window: mid-December through late January. Contact tdas@spps.org for more information.

     

    Please note: the portfolio assessment is used for Advanced Learner identification and is not a school choice enrollment application. Enrollment applications are processed by the Student Placement Center and can be found on the website: apply.spps.org

     

     


    According to the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC), using a standardized test may not effectively identify all students. SPPS believes in opening opportunities to students, and therefore provides this portfolio process as an additional way to identify gifted learners.

    Overview of the Portfolio Process 

    The portfolio review offers all students the opportunity to be assessed for Advanced Learner services through multiple measures.

    These measures include: an inventory of learner characteristics (rating scales) — including creativity, motivation, leadership, and learning challenges — completed by a teacher, family, and/or community member, as well as narrative input and samples of student work.
