Art Adventure at Capitol Hill
"How People Lived"
Art Art Adventure is a program of the Minneapolis Institute of Art that brings art, culture and history into the classroom.
Students develop critical thinking skills through discussions of various works selected around a particular theme. This year's theme is "How People Lived."
Art Adventure volunteers are needed to lead discussions in 1st- through 4th-grade classrooms. Volunteers typically present two art pieces from MIA's collection to at least two classrooms, including their own child's and others in the same grade. Sessions last about 30 minutes - and the students do almost all of the talking!
Students discuss the artwork at school then see the pieces in person during fieldtrips to the museum. (Art Adventure volunteers are not required to participate in the fieldtrips.)
2nd and 3rd grades participate in Art Adventure during the Fall. Grades 1 and 4 have Art Adventure during the Spring.
There are three ways to be trained as a volunteer, although most volunteers attend a 2-hour training session at MIA which covers the art pieces to be presented as well as tips on how to lead student discussions. All three (3) training options are listed here:
1. MIA Training: Attend an upcoming MIA-sponsored training session. Registration information below. Please note the PTO is billed for the training and is charged for no-shows.
2. Capitol Hill Training: Attend an informal training session at MIA led by Capitol Hill Coordinator Mary Frankson. To participate, contact Mary at firstname.lastname@example.org.
3. Self-Preparation (for experienced volunteers): Review the "How They Lived" booklet and see the art on your own. (A hardcopy of the booklet will be provided.)
