Elementary (K-5) Science Overview
-
All SPPS students will think and act like scientists and engineers.
Elementary Science in SPPS focuses on building both the science content and the inquiry and engineering skills outlined in the Minnesota Academic Science Standards. Each school’s elementary science specialist(s), and/or classroom teachers provide hands-on, inquiry-based instruction needed to meet these standards.
The SPPS Aligned Learning Guide for K-5 Science provides an overview of the science and engineering units that students experience at each grade level.
All science instruction in SPPS is designed to address the Minnesota Academic Standards for K-12 Science. The benchmarks that are in bold font and italics were selected as priority benchmarks through a rigorous analysis by teams of SPPS teachers. Priority benchmarks guide planning, drive instruction, and serve as "umbrellas" for the remaining benchmarks.
