Ms. Orensten

Hello there! My name is Rebekah Orensten and I LOVE my job as Library Media Specialist at BCMS! If you have any questions, please stop by the library or email me.

I am looking forward to starting my fourth year at The Creek (SY 2019-2020)! Last year, with the help of Library TAs and Genius Squad students the library was genrefied. I'm really excited for students to be able to be able to browse the library in a different way. The genres match what students read in their ELA classrooms (with the addtion of a couple extra genres): realistic fiction, historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, mystery, sports, and humor. I believe this will make a great impact on how students find books they want to read as well as making it easier for student TAs to help me put books back on the shelves for students to rechceck out. :)

When I'm not at BCMS, I spend time reading and I use the Goodreads app to keep track of how many books I read each year. It's a way for me to take notes on books so I can share with students, as well as challenge myself to read more. I enjoy reading YA novels - A Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds is one of my favorites. Besides reading, I enjoy spending time with family and friends as much as possible. I grew up in a family where we played lots of boardgames and cardgames - my favorites are cribbage, backgammon and Settlers of Catan. Beyond gamenights with friends, I enjoy going to author events, listen to live music, and laugh until I cry at comedy shows!

I look forward to meeting your student(s) and helping them find the book that fills their heart.

Picture note: Spring of 2017 Ms. Orensten submitted a grant to Ecolab for makerspace materials. We were gifted the funds fall 2017 to purchase a set of 18 ozobots and 2 ozobot evos along with 12 spheros and 3 ollies with jump ramps and more. Students interested in coding are encouraged to come see me during lunch to explore with the materials. Teachers wanting to use the materials are also welcome to borrow them for their classrooms.

Digital Media Explorations

  • In addition to my role as Library Media Specialist at Battle Creek Middle School I will also be teaching two sections of a new elective class this year, Digital Media Explorations (DME). In this class we will learn how to use our iPads to research, how to create with digital tools, and we learn about the role of media in our lives. If you have any questions you can email me at rebekah.orensten@stpaul.k12.mn.us

All homework assignments will be on SchoologyStudents will need FULL access to their iPads and their first assignment is ensuring that their iUpdate is complete.

iPads: Students MUST bring their iPads to class each day. All projects and grades are heavily based on access to electronic resources and digital tools. Some work can be completed offline; however, without an iPad, students will not be able to earn full credit or complete the final projects.

Things to know: I do not assign homework often. All of our work is done in class. Students are given time to complete tasks over the course of each unit. Students who do not complete work during class may complete it at home. There is a lot of self-directed work in this class.
