Short-Term Disability Overview
Short Term Disability (STD) coverage is available on an optional basis to benefit-eligible employees working at least 20 hours per week. Short term disability (STD) replaces a portion of your pay for medical disabilities while you are out of work due to a non-work-related illness or injury. Benefits on a claim begin the first day of an accident or the 8th day of an illness and continue for a maximum of 3 months or 6 months for employees who do not qualify for Long Term Disability.
You are eligible to elect coverage up to the lesser of 66.667% of your monthly salary (max $3,000) for each month you are on STD. Injuries or illnesses covered under workers compensation benefits are not additionally covered under short term disability.
The current Short Term Disability carrier is Madision National/National Insurance Services (NIS) Benefit elgible employees can enroll in STD insurance within 30 days of their hire date.
After the initial 30-day window, STD insurance can only be added or coverage amounts increased during active enrollment.
- New hire employees are guaranteed issue up to 66.667% of your monthly salary (max $3,000) of your annual salary and do not need to complete the Evidence of Insurability questionnaire (EOI).
- Active Enrollment - Employees that add or increase coverage amounts during active enrollment will be contacted by the carrier for additional information that is needed.
