Secondary Physical Education

  • Philosophy

    Physical Education provides students with the skills to live happy, healthy, active lifestyles. Our programs encourage individual goal setting, character development, social/emotional resilience and creativity. By allowing our students to explore areas of cultural dance, fitness activities, individual and team sports, outdoor education and cooperative team building activities, we help to develop young people who will be physically active, mentally creative, emotionally resilient, and socially respectful and empathetic.

  • Guidelines

    Teachers:

    • base lessons on standards and benchmarks including a balance of individual, dual and team movement activities
    • use kinesiology of movement in instruction
    • include developmentally sequenced and appropriate progressions of gross motor skill and movement concepts
    • organize daily instruction into four main sections:
      • warm up to improve physical fitness, review or introduce content
      • skill or concept instruction, refinement and practice
      • application of skills and concepts
      • summary of lesson and check for understanding
    • break instruction down into sections no more than five minutes in length.

  • Variations

    Flipped Classroom:
    Create videos for activity related skills ranging from 5-10 minutes. Students watch at home or at school. Time in the PE classroom then involves direct participation of the sport or fitness activity with more direct feedback from the teacher.


  • Assessment

    • Engaging classroom assessments (both formative and summative) are ongoing.
    • We track and analyze formative and summative assessments.
    • We base grades on standards/benchmarks, not on dressing out.
    • Regular communication with parents is prevalent and documented
