9th Grade Co-Taught English

  • "Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."  William Butler Yeats

Welcome to 9th Grade English! The goal of English 9 is to make students more skilled readers, writers, speakers, and thinkers. We will be reading short stories and excerpts from a variety of texts, Of Mice and Men, and Romeo and Juliet this year, along with selected works of nonfiction, and a strong focus on student choice readings.

We will follow the St. Paul Public Schools district wide sequence of the newly revised Minnesota State Standards. For more information please access: http://education.state.mn.us/MDE/index.html

Throughout the course of the school year, students will be working to master the writing process, continue to strengthen their reading abilities, and hone their communication skills. Units of study will focus on reading, writing, and thinking in a variety of genres, including non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and texts relevant to media literacy. In addition, students will practice and grow foundations skills, such as: organization, vocabulary, grammar, and the utilization of a wide variety of AVID comprehension strategies. Our classroom will work to encourage and provide opportunity for depth of thought, analysis, discussion, and collaboration, particularly around expressing personal beliefs.
