  • Bike safety class

One of the best ways to build on education around Safe Routes is to implement a pedestrian/bicycle safety education class or unit. The Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota has a free, downloadable curriculum, called, "Walk! Bike! Fun!" and it has been used widely across the state.  BikeMN also offers a training for educators on the curriculum and how best to teach it.  SPPS has a mobile bike fleet available, ideal for teaching 4-8 graders about bicycle safety and rules of the road.

Other education initiatives can focus on educating drivers how to safely drive around school campuses and their surrounding neighborhoods through a public service announcement campaign. Another example is an examination of active transportation systems for a high school class project.

MnDOT's Safe Routes website offers examples and additional considerations.
