Ms. Melanie Tlusty
Melanie Tlusty: Choral Director/Piano Teacher
Hello! My name is Melanie Tlusty, and I am the choir and piano teacher at Johnson High School! I am also the advisor for Hmong Club and Strong Women's Society. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls with a Bachelors of Music Education! I absolutely love my job, and I have been teaching at JHS since 2018.
Teaching high school choir is literally a dream come true! When I was seven years old, my hometown high school was looking for children to be in their upcoming musical, "The Wizard of Oz." I auditioned and was cast in the musical. I was so excited! When I went to the first rehearsal, I heard the high school choir sing for the first time. It was truly a magical experience, and I was hooked! It was in that moment that I knew I wanted to be a high school choir teacher!
I have also taken piano lessons since I was four years old! As someone who initially struggled to read music, I am passionate about teaching students music literacy! It is important to me that students learn how to read music, so that they can be independent in their musicianship! The sky is the limit with the right set of tools!
My goal as an educator is to build a strong sense of community in my classroom, develop strong, competent, and independent musicians, and evoke in my students a lifelong passion for music. One of my students described choir like this: "When you join choir, you find a family and a place to belong. No matter who you are, where you've been, or what you believe, you are welcome here."
