    Course Description: 

     *Examines and applies the fundamentals & skills of supervising swimming pool activities.  American Red Cross certifications can be earned.  Successful completion of this class will have you ready and certified for a job life guarding!

     *American Red Cross (2006)  CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer.  Yardley, Pa:

     Prerequisites: 

     *Passed the required Physical Education class for 9th graders.

     *Swim 500 yards continuously using front crawl & breast stroke.

     *Swim 20 yards, feet-first surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10# object, return to the surface and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the 10# object, within 1 minute&40sec.

     *Be at least 15 years of age before the last scheduled class day.

     *There is an American Red Cross fee of $15 for this class.  Inability to pay this fee will not exclude any student from this class.

     

    Course Objectives:  

     *To meet the criteria set forth by the American Red Cross to be a certified lifeguard.

     *To be prepared to be hired to work as a lifeguard.

     

    Goals:

     *To demonstrate mastery of each lifeguarding critical skill which includes such things as water rescues, backboarding execution, first aid, CPR and AED use.

     *To successfully complete three rescue scenarios.  These scenarios will test you on your ability to evaluate, react and make decisions in emergency situations.  They will consist of a series of real-life simulations where you will be expected to combine multiple lifeguarding skills.

     *To successfully complete three CPR scenarios.  There scenarios will test you on your ability to evaluate, react and make decisions in emergency situations.  They will consist of a series of real-life simulations where you will be expected to combine multiple CPR skills.

     *To correctly answer 80% on each of the standardized American Red Cross written exams.

     

    Class Policies:

     *Participation in all classroom & pool activities.

     *Attire, appropriate & supportive clothing is required, in & out of the pool.

     *Follow safety rules posted in the pool.

     

    Evaluation:

     *Your grade is determined by your ability to perform all skills, ability to correctly complete the scenarios, your scores on the written exams, your participation in daily activities, completion of textbook homework assignments, your positive attitude and your attendance.
