Aviation Camp

In the Spring, 4th graders spend three days at the Experimental Aircraft Association's Aviation Camp in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

They built airplane ribs and learn about the Wright Flyer, Spirit of Saint Louis, Voyager, SpaceShipOne and many other planes which changed the course of aviation history.

In hands-on learning labs, they explore the Four Forces of Flight: lift, gravity, thrust, and drag. Working in teams, they launch an “Eggstronaut” tying not to scramble it upon landing. Students also test different designs of bottle rockets and paper airplanes for distance and accuracy.

During the three days, they expand and apply their knowledge of engineering and the forces involved in flight.

This trip provides an ideal example of how extended learning supports the lessons taught in school.
