Volunteering with NHS
Volunteering with National Honor Society is awesome! You get to meet new people, learn a new skill, help others, and build community.
Sophomores seeking application into NHS for their junior year should complete at least 10 volunteer hours in order for you to be eligible.
- Unacceptable hours: babysitting for free, chores, or an activity you got paid for.
Current members: Juniors and Seniors
During the school year, you need to complete at least 40 hours of service. 10 of these hours need to be "Como" hours, meaning they are Como activities. These might include working concessions, helping during freshmen orientation, or assisting a teacher after school with some work. The remainder of the hours can come from outside school. We will provide some volunteer events that you can sign up for, but you are also responsible for seeking some out on your own.
Throughout the year, there will be 2 mandatory chapter-wide events. You will need to attend both of them and you can count them toward your hours. In November, there is an Induction Ceremony to induct the new Juniors, and in May there is a Pinning Ceremony to honor the Seniors. This year's dates are November 19th, 2014 and May 20th, 2015.
Volunteer hours sheets will need to be recorded by you and turned in to one of the volunteer officers or to Ms. Kahn in 1219. See the "NHS Forms" page for printing that form.
If you have any questions about volunteering, please see any one of the officers, Ms. Lowther in 1404, or Ms. Kahn in 1219 before or after school. Have fun!!
