Saint Paul Public Schools leaders and the Board of Education have started planning for the 2026-27 budget (fiscal year 2027). While the approved school district referendum will help SPPS avoid millions of dollars in budget cuts for next year, normal budget adjustments will still be needed to balance next year’s budget due to ongoing changes in student enrollment, the state funding formula, inflation and employment contract expenses. SPPS remains committed to ongoing community feedback and making budget decisions with integrity and transparency.
Monthly Updates
SPPS is anticipating two consecutive years of enrollment declines. As a result, SPPS is anticipating a budget shortfall of approximately $15.1 million for next year. This is significantly less than the shortfalls that SPPS experienced in the past two budget years. It is also much improved thanks to the voter-approved referendum.
Families and staff were invited to an in-person community budget meeting on December 11, 2025. The meeting included a presentation on how the district's budget works and how the voter-approved referendum will impact this year's budget. The recorded presentations are available to watch here.
SPPS remains committed to ongoing community feedback around future budget decisions. All families are encouraged to complete a brief online budget survey to gather community priorities for the 2026-27 budget. All responses are anonymous, and the survey will remain open until January 16, 2026.
