Saint Paul Public Schools leaders and the Board of Education have started planning for the 2026-27 budget (fiscal year 2027). While the approved school district referendum will help SPPS avoid millions of dollars in budget cuts for next year, normal budget adjustments will still be needed to balance next year’s budget due to ongoing changes in student enrollment, the state funding formula, inflation and employment contract expenses. SPPS remains committed to ongoing community feedback and making budget decisions with integrity and transparency.
Monthly Updates
Families and staff were invited to an in-person community budget meeting on April 28, 2026. The meeting included a presentation about the budget and how budget decisions are made, followed by a question-and-answer session. The presentations are available here.
SPPS is finalizing the 2026-27 school year budget. The district’s projected budget shortfall has improved slightly since last month’s update to $14.35 million, which is 1.7% of the district’s total budget. SPPS families and staff are invited to an in-person District Community Budget Meeting on Tuesday, April 28, from 5:30-7 p.m. at Como Park Senior High School.
The district’s anticipated revenue from specific funding categories has improved slightly, lowering SPPS’s projected budget shortfall from $21 million to $14.43 million. Despite this improvement, SPPS must align next year's expenses with an anticipated decline in student enrollment and increasing costs for services and personnel.
