Partnering to Build Safer Streets
SPPS partners with the City of Saint Paul and other agencies to develop Safe Routes plans and make streets near schools safer for walking and biking.
SPPS started its Safe Routes program in 2014, working with the City of Saint Paul Public Works and other community stakeholders to create a roadmap for getting students walking and biking. The program has been widely popular, especially once the district's mobile bicycle fleet was introduced in 2017. Many students now celebrate several Walk/Bike to School days during the school year, learn bicycle and pedestrian safety education in their Physical Education classes, and are better prepared to navigate the active transportation infrastructure of their city.
SPPS works with several partners on Safe Routes, including St. Paul Public Works, the St. Paul Police Department, the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, Allina Health, and St. Paul-Ramsey County Public Health, among others. Partners coordinate work through the Saint Paul Safe Routes to School Steering Committee.
