Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Days
Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Days will be here soon - be sure to save the dates!
October 9: Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day/ International Walk to School DayNovember 14: Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day- February 5: Minnesota Winter Walk to School Day
- May 7: Walk, Bike, and Roll to School Day/ National Bike to School Day
The official dates are on Wednesdays (with the exception of Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day), but schools should pick dates that work well for them anytime during the month of the event. All schools are encouraged to participate, and anyone can plan an event - parents, students, and/or staff.
Be sure to register your school-based events (SPPS registration). If you register early enough, MnDOT will send your school some swag to hand out at your event!
For help planning events, contact Sarah Stewart, Safe Routes to School Lead, sarah.stewart@spps.org, 651-744-4188.
Ideas for celebrating
There are many ways to celebrate - choose activities that work well for your school! Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Keep it simple: adapt these communication templates to promote the day to families, students, and staff, and encourage them to walk or bike (newsletter articles, social media posts, and more).
- Hold a bus stop and walk event so students who ride the bus can participate too. (Contact Sarah Stewart, SPPS Safe Routes Lead, to plan this.)
- Plan a walk or bike ride during the school day. You can keep it on your school campus or explore the neighborhood around your school.
- Try out a walking school bus or bike bus/train, or encourage families to try them.
- Do the fun activities on MnDOT's Walk to School Day, Winter Walk to School Day, and Bike to School Day websites, where you will find walk bingo, word finds, scavenger hunts, and more!
- Participate in MnDOT’s Walk to School Day photo contest (October), Golden Snow Boot Award (February) or Bike to School Day poster contest (May) and get bragging rights for your school!
- Help students learn and practice safe walking and biking skills.
- Reserve an SPPS mobile bike fleet for bike education and rides. If the SPPS fleet is booked, BikeMN also has bike fleets that are free to reserve for those who have completed Walk! Bike! Fun! curriculum training.
