License Extension Information
The Minnesota Department of Education has merged with the Board of Teaching to form a new organization call the Professional Educators License and Standards Board (PELSB). PELSB will replace the Minnesota Department of Education (MED) effective January 1, 2018. Due to this merger PELSB has granted a one year extension to all current Standard License holders. Please see the table below to view extension date or click on the link to look your license up on the PELSB system:

Effect January 1, 2018 the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) has provided a one (1) year extension to anyone who has a standard five (5) year teaching license. According to Minnesota Statue 122A.17 (b), all teacher licenses effective January 1, 2018, shall remain valid for one additional year after the date the license is scheduled to expire. This extension is also valid for all service related licenses. Please note that this extension does not apply to admin, special permissions, waivers, variances, community expert or temporary limited licenses in effect on January 1, 2018.
Please wait to submit your license renewal material until the begining of the 2018-2019 school year. At this time, the Committee will only review licenses that are currently expired. The check the status of your license click on the Educator License Lookup link.
Starting January 1, 2019 you will have access to pay PELSB for your license renewal once the Relicensure Committee has approved your materials. Educators cannot renew their five-year license until January of the year in which it expires. Clock hours earned prior to this extension will remain valid during the extension period. Clock hours earned during this one year extension can only be used for your current renewal period. Please review the infograph below regarding new tiered system.
