History of SPPS Superintendents

On May 12, 2025, Dr. Stacie Stanley became superintendent of Saint Paul Public Schools.

She succeeded Dr. John Thein, who served as interim superintendent from May 2024 to May 2025 following the tenure of Dr. Joe Gothard, who led the district from 2017 to 2024.

Below is a list of past Superintendents of Saint Paul Public Schools.

Rev. E. D. Neill was chosen as the secretary and treasurer of SPPS upon the organization of the board in 1856. After he resigned in March 1860, Rev. John Mattocks was named his successor, and continued to act as secretary and superintendent until September 1872.
