Grades 6-8 Summer Learning Programs
Students experience hands-on activities and field trips with a focus on environmental science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Classes and activities include engineering, coding, construction, sports, environmental studies, cooking and working with computers. This program is sponsored by 3M and includes multiple STEM-themed field trips.
Students receive academic support, develop leadership skills and participate in enrichment activities. Students in grade 5 learn skills to prepare for their transition to middle school. When registering, students rank their top 3 elective choices to enhance their summer learning experience.
Factor in fun at Math Corps at Macalester! This program for middle school students gives you the formula for a summer of learning and fun regardless of past math performance. Students take classes in mathematics and robotics, eat lunch in the college dining hall, and meet kids from around the city. Instruction is provided by Macalester professors, and students are supported by high school teaching assistants and college student instructors. Math Corps is a program honored by the National Summer Learning Association as one of the top summer programs in the country.
Please note: Students will transfer yellow buses at Rondo Education Center for morning and afternoon routes.
Students engage with real-world design and engineering challenges led by SPPS teachers and university professors on the University of Minnesota campus. Students are called to be leaders, innovators and disruptors in science, technology, engineering, art and math (STEAM). Students create and build their own scientific designs using tools in university labs.
Students will extend their school-year learning through active, fun and hands-on experiences. The program includes activities in math, coding, reading, physical education, economics, health, arts, and studies about Minnesota plants and animals. Small group literacy instruction, community partnerships providing enrichment opportunities, and field trips support discovery of new talents, skills and interests.
