The purpose of the SPPS Academic Support Center is to provide in-person academic and/or social-emotional learning support for 6-12 grade students and their families during distance learning. The center will provide academic support, not classroom instruction.

How do students register?
Students are referred by school staff. Please call SPPS Student Placement Center at 651-632-3760 to confirm student assignment for days, session and transportation if needed.

What type of support is available?
Areas of support include: reading, math, social studies, science, English/writing and Schoology (Grades 3-12) navigation, technology/device support to support Distance Learning 2.0, and social-emotional support.

Who will provide direct service to students?
A team of Educational Assistants, Teaching Assistants, SPPS temporary staff, retired teachers, contractors, community partners, and volunteers with a background in education and teaching, will provide the support to all students attending the center.

How long can students stay at the ASC?
Students can receive 3 hours of support, 3 days/week for approximately 3 weeks per term.

Will there be meals provided?
Nutrition Services will provide healthy snacks for all students in the morning and afternoon.

Will there be transportation for students?
Limited transportation can be arranged via the registration process. The Student Placement Center (SPC) is assisting with the registration, transportation and enrollment of students to ASC program.
Due to other transportation needs (Essential Kids Care, meal delivery, hybrid sites), transportation may not always be available.

What is the capacity for each ASC?
We are prepared to welcome 200 students per day at Washington and 100 students per day at the other sites. If there are more requests than can be accommodated, there will be a waiting list and students will be prioritized based on academic needs.

What health and safety measures are in place?
The ASC will follow all state guidelines for school settings as required by the Minnesota Department of Health. This includes face coverings for all students and staff, maintaining social distancing and frequent handwashing.
Symptoms of COVID-19 include: fever greater than or equal to 100.4° F, new onset and/or worsening cough, difficulty breathing, new loss of taste or smell OR at least 2 of the following: sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, chills, muscle pain, excessive fatigue, new onset of headache, new onset of nasal congestion or runny nose.
Answer the following four questions prior to sending your child:
- Did my child recently test positive for COVID-19?
- Does my child have any of the COVID-19 symptoms listed above?
- Does my child live with someone who is being tested for COVID-19 or showing symptoms of COVID-19?
- Did my child have close contact (within 6 feet for more than 15 minutes) with someone who recently tested positive for COVID-19?
If you answered YES to any of the above:
- Reschedule your appointment and contact your child’s healthcare provider.
- Report your child’s symptoms or exposure using the online SPPS COVID-19 Reporting System.

One-on-one appointments are available at Rondo Community Outreach Library, Riverview Library and George Latimer Central Library.
