26th Annual Saint Paul Honors Concert is April 18 at the Ordway

Honors Concert
  • More than 450 SPPS student artists, vocalists and instrumentalists will showcase their skills during the 26th annual Honors Concert on Tuesday, April 18 at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

The annual showcase -- the result of a partnership with SPPS, Ordway Center for Performing Arts and the Minnesota Museum of American Art (The M) -- includes an instrumental and vocal concert, as well as a projected video of original student artwork and student dance.

The event will be emceed by Saidat, a Harding Senior High School graduate who has become an entertainer, speaker, author and singer.

The Honors Concert will feature a performance by high school orchestra, band and choir students conducted by Dr. Heidi Miller and Dr. James Miller (band), Dr. Michael Scott (orchestra), and Dr. Angela Broeker (choir), who will be accompanied by Thomas Bartsch.

The event will also include a student Performance Showcase prior to the concert in the Marzitelli Foyer.

Student artwork will also be on display at The M’s Project Space in the Pioneer Endicott Building during the Honors Visual Art Exhibition, April 27 - May 14. The exhibition is free and open to the public and will feature selected paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and other works submitted by SPPS students.

“The Honors Concert celebrates the wonderful accomplishments of students in our community and encourages their continued growth in the performing arts,” said Jamie Grant, Ordway president and CEO. “It’s a privilege for the Ordway to partner with these phenomenal organizations and host this annual event.”

Since 1992, the annual Honors Concert has featured the musical and artistic talents of nearly 9,000 Saint Paul students through vocal and instrumental performances, spoken word poetry, and visual art exhibitions. Students are selected to participate through auditions and art submissions.

“This event showcases the tremendous talent of our SPPS students,” said Superintendent John Thein. “For many of them, it’s the first time they’ve performed onstage at a professional theater or had their artwork in a professional gallery. It’s a thrill to see the excitement and confidence this event brings to them.”

General admission tickets to the Honors Concert are $5 and can be purchased by phone at 651-224-4222 or online at Ordway.org.
