Mr. Herman started as the school counselor at Dayton's Bluff in the fall of 2014. He earned his Masters of Science in Education - School Counseling at the University of Wisconsin - River Falls and his Bachelor's degree at Hamline University in History. He teaches all grade levels with lessons on emotional management, problem solving, anti-bullying, personal safety, transitions skills, and academic skills for learning. Mr. Herman also works with students expressing needs for small group skills work as well as individual interventions.
Mr. Herman's free time is spent traveling, playing sports, and working around the house. His love of travel has taken him as far away as Mongolia, living a year in Russia, but his all time favorite travel destinations were Iceland and New Zealand. Mr. Herman loves playing ultimate frisbee, tennis, running, and spikeball. When he is not being active he enjoys a good project at home that includes landscaping or building something.
Since moving to St. Paul for college, Mr. Herman has lived in St. Paul his entire adult life and currently calls the neighborhood of Highland Park his home. He grew up in northern Wisconsin on the shores of Lake Superior where his parents built their own log home and where he grew up without running water or electricity. He has one sister who is a high school English teacher in the state of New York. He sends all of his papers to be proofread by her!
To say that Mr. Herman is a Dayton's Bluff homer would be an understatement. From day one he fell in love with the school and has been here every year of his professional career as a school counselor. Dayton's Bluff's strengths are its students and the following quote has always guided his work with students, staff, and families. Mr. Herman believes that "everyone already has all the strengths they need to be successful - we simply need to find what has worked already and adapt it to new surroundings."
