27th Annual Saint Paul Honors Concert is April 17 at the Ordway

  • More than 450 Saint Paul Public School student artists, vocalists and instrumentalists will showcase their skills and talents during the 27th annual Honors Concert on Tuesday, April 17 at the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts.

    This annual event -- presented by the partnership of Saint Paul Public Schools, Ordway and (SPPS), and the Minnesota Museum of American Art (The M) -- includes an instrumental and vocal concert, performance art and a projected video of original student Honors artwork. This year, Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center will be also join the partnership as the location for the visual art exhibition.

    The evening will be emceed by musician and educator, David Billingsley, who performs nationally and internationally and teaches music to student of various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. He has served as Dean of Student Affairs & Music Teacher at LoveWorks Academy, as a Music Teacher at Minnehaha Academy and Creative Arts Secondary School. Currently he is Executive Director of The Billingsley School of Music and Arts.

    The event will also include a Student Showcase prior to the concert. The Showcase is a free event.

    The Honors student artwork will be shown May 17-June 3 at Indigenous Roots Cultural Arts Center, 788 E. 7th Street, in Saint Paul.

    The Honors Visual Arts Exhibition hours are Monday through Friday, 11:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. and from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The exhibition is available Saturday-Sunday, by appointment. The exhibition is free and open to the public, and will feature selected paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and other works submitted by SPPS students.

    Since 1992, the annual Honors Concert has featured the musical and artistic talents of nearly 9,000 Saint Paul students through vocal and instrumental performances, spoken word poetry and visual art exhibitions. Students are selected to participate through auditions and art submissions.

    General admission tickets to the Honors Concert are $5 and can be purchased at Ordway’s box office the night of the event, by phone at 651-224-4222 or online at Ordway.org.
