Hello students and families:
Whether you love math, like math, or don’t like math…YET—I’m looking forward to getting to know you and working with you this year. My name is Signe Thompson and I will be teaching 7th-grade math (pre-algebra). My first name is pronounced SIG’-nee (rhymes with “big knee”) but students can call me Ms. Thompson or simply Ms. T. Like a few of you, I am new to Parkway this year. I am so excited to join this awesome learning community!
In this math class, our work is NOT going to be viewed as a performance or race—we are going to strive for deeper understanding. I hope we all learn to embrace making mistakes as a great way to challenge our brain and grow.
Before becoming a teacher, I worked many years in the marketing field—analyzing data, forecasting sales & profit, and working with predictive statistical models. I always enjoyed working with numbers, doing puzzles, and problem-solving, and after reading a book about mathematical mindsets, I decided to go back to school to become a math teacher. Both my parents were math teachers, so I guess I just couldn’t fight it! I joined a Master’s program at Hamline University and until this position, I had been teaching at the high school level in Minneapolis.
I am married with two kids, one in college and one in 7th grade. We also have a dog and a cat. To recharge my energy, I really enjoy spending time in nature—taking walks with my dog and family, hiking down by the Mississippi near my home, and gardening in my yard.
Some of the resources I may use during distance learning are listed below. They can be added to student ipads through self-service. It would be great if you can help your student download these apps on their ipad prior to the first day of school. Many of these are probably already installed. Go to the self-service app, enter the resource name in the search field, and click the Install button. If it says re-install, it’s already been added.
Resources to download: IXL, Google Chrome, Jamboard, Kahoot, Quizizz, Desmos, Khan Academy, Prodigy, Schoology, Notability, Flipgrid, Nearpod, Edpuzzle.
Materials Needed: ipad, notebook, pencil, eraser, colored pencils, highlighter
So much is different and uncertain this year, but remember that I am here to help and support you. Please feel free to contact me via email, or call me to leave a voicemail on my school phone line 651-744-4932 (I don’t have a direct school line that comes to my home). If texting is your preference, send a text to email@example.com and then I will get the message to my ipad and then I can text you back.
