Band Program

  • Being a member of the school band is a great way for students to learn important new skills, develop their artistic side, and have fun! There are 2 bands for 4th and 5th grade students, beginning and advanced. Students in the beginning band are all 4th-5th graders who are learning a band instrument for the first time and advanced band members are those who have previous experience and have completed at least half of their first method book at the beginning of the school year.

It is expected that students who sign up for band make a yearlong commitment to the band program. It is essential for all students to experience the entire year in band (concerts, small ensembles, field trips, etc.) to create a successful and meaningful experience. It is expected that band students will attend all concerts and events.

Small group lessons are the core of the first years of instrumental study. Lessons are 25 minutes, once per week, in like-instrument groups (whenever possible). I will provide students with a weekly schedule, which will list the lesson day and time. Students should leave their classroom 5 minutes before their lesson is scheduled to begin. If 3 ore more unexcused absences occur, students may be dropped from the program.

In order to be successful in band, students will need to practice. A minimum of 150 minutes per week of practice is considered necessary for normal progress (30 minutes per day, 5 days per week). Parental support for daily practice is essential to success. Even if parents have no experience playing an instrument themselves, helping students to find time to practice and encouraging their progress can make a big impact on success.

In addition to small group lessons, students will receive one large group rehearsal per week. Large group rehearsal for advanced band students will begin in October and for beginning band students around December. Large group rehearsals are 50 minutes in length. Beginning band students will have at least one major concert in the spring and advanced band members will have two concerts (one in December and May). Additional performing opportunities may arise during the school year.
