Hi, I’m Nancy Flynn. As principal of Highland Park Elementary School, I am privileged to work with an extremely dedicated staff and wonderful group of students. As an IB PYP school, we strive to foster an inquiry-based learning environment that encourages students and staff to be active learners, well-rounded individuals, and engaged world citizens. We continually reinforce multicultural understanding and respect for our community of learners in a safe, nurturing environment.
I am very passionate about education and ensuring that all students have access to a rigorous, challenging curriculum in an environment that encourages risk-taking and open-mindedness. I believe that all students should have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities such as music, sports, and the arts, to nurture creativity and to establish lifelong interests. Students should also be expected to perform service projects to gain empathy and compassion for others.
One of the aspects of the IB learner profile is balance. My mantra is, work hard, play hard. My passions beyond education include hiking mountains worldwide, alpine skiing with my sons out west, biking, playing tennis, running, and playing the drums.
This is my 24th year in Saint Paul Public Schools, and 20th year as an administrator. Prior to being at HPE, I was principal at Ramsey Junior High/Middle School for four years and principal at Randolph Heights Elementary for nine years. I also spent three years as an assistant principal at Washington Middle School in Albuquerque, New Mexico and at Saturn Riverfront Academy in SPPS.
