February is Art Adventure month at Horace Mann! Parent volunteers willbe in the classrooms with students in grades K - 4 9 (and 6th this year) discussing eightdifferent works of art from the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Our theme this year is How People Lived and includes art from all over the world. In March, the students will have a field trip to the MIA to see the art they have studied in class. This is always agreat adventure!
But you don't need to wait for March to visit the MIA. Target Family Days are Free events. On February 13th, 2011, Target and the Museum will present Mighty Myths from 11 am – 4:30 pm. Come to the Museum for a day inspired by the ancients. Be mesmerized by stories of all-powerful Zeus, wise Athena, strong Hercules, and swift Mercury. Act out a myth using shadows and movement. Create a headband like the great Greek athletes once wore. See the MIA's collection of ancient art and join a sculpture studio to model your own great hero. Stop by the Greek and Roman Art Cart, where you'll draw on a Greek vase and try on a toga. Plus, explore the galleries to see how Renaissance and Baroque artists found inspiration from ancient myths.
Visit the museums website at www.artsmia.org for more information.
The Art Adventure Program at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts brings reproductions of works of art that can’t leave the museum into elementary school classrooms. Trained school volunteers visit classrooms with posters of art relating to a common theme, such as animals, celebrations, or relationships.
- Approximately 250 schools are involved in the Art Adventure Program.
- Every year nearly 2,000 volunteer presenters attend Picture Person training sessions at the museum.
- Over 105,000 students participate in classroom presentations every year.
- Approximately 30,000 students follow-up their classroom presentations with a museum visit.
Art Adventure and the Art Adventure field trips are sponsored and fully funded by:
