Mrs. Mariana Tennyson

"Childhood should be a journey, not a race."

Welcome to our First and Second Grade Combination class! My name is Mariana Tennyson. This is my 34rd year in teaching- wow, I really don't feel that old! This is my first year teaching a Gr. 1/Gr. 2 split classroom. The past 9 years, I taught 1st grade. Taking on this combination class is going to be amazing. There is so much growth from the first day of 1st grade to the last. I now have the opportunity to watch my 2nd graders grow even more. First graders are so enthusiastic about everything in their lives. Second graders love order, facts, and safety. I have just been handed the best class ever. My 2nd graders will be there to support my 1st graders. I look forward to working with every family that enters my classroom. The students of Horace Mann are delightful! I have been here since 1999 and find them to be smart, focused, kind, collaborative, and highly inquisitive.

During my many years in education, I have thoroughly enjoyed roles as a gifted and talented specialist, Reading Recovery teacher, building content coach, as well as a Title 1 specialist for reading and mathematics.   Even though each role has its own flavor, they all have a common theme:  Honoring the whole child and the diverse cultures, gifts, and talents that each student brings to learning.

I live in Eagan with my husband, dog- Lindy Lou and 2 birds- Loco and Jose. I have a son, Robert, who is currently finishing up his Ph.D. program at the University of Washington and will be out searching for a position at a university. Hopefully there will be  professor opening at the U of M. It would be nice having him close to home. Since graduating from college, my daughter is actively pursuing advanced studies in science. She just purchased her first home this summer in Robinsdale. It has been so fun watching her transform an average home into the house of her dreams. She is currenty working for Lutheran Social Services and loves her job.

My family and I enjoy traveling and have visited countries all over the world. I can not wait until it is safe to travel once again. We love to immersed ourselves in other cultures ~ What a wonderful window to our world! When we are not traveling, I keep busy swimming, biking, hiking, gardening, and reading. Nothing beats a hot summer day relaxing in the pool with a good book!

I am looking forward to getting to know all of you.  If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
