Degrees and Certifications:
Ms. Kuhner Berker
My name is Laurel Kuhner Berker and I have been teaching at the American Indian Magnet since 1997. I taught fifth grade for fifteen years; however, I am now teaching fourth grade.
I have a bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Virginia, a master's degree in public administration from the University of Houston, and a master's degree in curriculum and instruction from the University of Minnesota. Before I started teaching I worked as a grants administrator at the University of Houston and Montclair State College in New Jersey. I also worked as a teacher in the district’s Discovery Program for several years.
Although I came to teaching in a round about way, I love working with children. I particularly enjoy helping students become independent learners. I believe it is my job to prepare your child for academic success in junior and senior high school. My goal is to help children discover that they are capable of much more than they thought they were capable of learning. In our classroom, learning is required. FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION.
I am married with one son, who graduated from the University of Minnesota. I enjoy reading, cooking, and traveling in my spare time. As a military brat, I have lived all over the United States, Turkey and the United Kingdom. My husband is from Turkey, where I lived with my family from the middle of fifth grade through eighth grade. I speak Turkish so if you ever need a translator, just let me know. Whenever we have time, my family and I enjoy traveling to Turkey to visit relatives and enjoy floating in the Aegean Sea.
