Greetings and welcome to my school web page. It is an honor to teach at Como Park Senior High School. We have a nurturing and accepting school environment where students learn and grow into confident young adults. Our classroom 1214B motto: Everyday we are going to read, write, and learn so that we become better students.  We have fun everyday.  We are proud to be Como Park Cougars!

My Story: I started teaching for Saint Paul Public Schools in 2008, however I am not new to the world of work and caring for others. After graduating from Robbinsdale Armstrong High School I earned my bachelor degree in the area of Gerontology and Administration from the University of Minnesota. I earned my long-term care administrators license and had a rich and rewarding first career as an administrator of skilled nursing facilities throughout the state of Minnesota.

However when my own children entered kindergarten I experienced first hand the important role teachers play in the lives of students and decided that I wanted to be a teacher.  In 2008 I left nursing home administration and enrolled at Hamline University to earn my master’s degree and teaching license in special education in the areas of specific learning disabilities and emotional behavioral disabilities. In 2014, I completed my licensure requirements for autism spectrum disorder.

As a classroom teacher: I offer individualized instruction in the areas of math, reading, writing, life skills, and social skills.  We work closely on learning work and life skills and look for community volunteer opportunities. We work with Multicultural Learning Trunks through the MRC center of Saint Paul Public Schools. We also work on lessons in the areas of science, social students, and health. This year Como Park Senior was selected as a phase 1 school for the Ipad initiative of SPPS.  Starting in December all students will have access to digital learning though the individual use of Ipads as an instructional tool and learning strategy.

Why I work at Como Park Senior:The teachers at Como Park High School are commited to the success of students. We have supportive school administrators and helpful and experienced colleagues. I am the proud case manager of 11 senior high students with individual learning needs due to characteristics of the autism spectrum disorder.  Each and every one of my students bring a wonderful and unique set of strengths and gifts to our classroom and school. Together we learn and grow and become stronger.

My three most important roles as a Special Education Teacher at Como Park Senior High: As a case manager: it is my job to oversee the processes of the Individualized Education Plans (IEP’s).  I work to build a team with students, families, and school professionals to develop the best learning plan for students. I organize IEP meetings, monitor student progress, and ensure that students have access to the best possible education to meet their learning needs.

As an adaptive athletics coach: I recruit and develop students' athletic skills in soccer, floor hockey, and bowling. Sometimes we join with other high schools in Saint Paul Public Schools, but when we have enough interested players we have our own team, like we do with adaptive bowling. Students who are interested in learning and having fun are all welcome to play and compete afterschool and in state tournaments. All students must pass a sports physical and agree to the eligibility criteria of the Minnesota State High School League. Go Cougars!
