Our Music Classes
Battle Creek Elementary students can use our new Orff xylophone instruments to create and perform music on and accompany songs. We were fortunate to receive an Ecolab 2013 Visions for Learning Program Grant for music instruments. These Orff instruments will help the students to become musicians and learn the elements of music while playing and having fun making music.
Students in grades K-5 are busy making music by singing, playing instruments, and moving to the music. The instruments include the pitched percussion instruments, rhythm sticks, drums, tambourines, maracas, triangles, and Boom Whackers. They are enjoying discovering music from around the world including Africa, South America, Russia, Egypt, Canada, and the Netherlands.
Primary students are moving to music by playing folk song games, moving to the rhythms and improvising their own movements to music. They are learning the elements of music such as tempo, dynamics, high sounds, and low sounds. The students also gain valuable cooperation and social skills by playing folk song games.
Intermediate students are busy refining their knowledge of the treble staff and composing and performing on the pitched percussion instruments. The students are practicing complex beat patterns by playing "Echo Canon" and learning to sing in 2, 3, and 4 part rounds.
All students are practicing reading and notating the rhythm patterns of whole, half, quarter, eighth and sixteenth notes. They are also learning to sing together in a group with good vocal quality and sound.
