My name is Erin Black and this is my sixth year at Mississippi Creative Arts. This will be my 12th year teaching. I taught 5 years in Pre-K and 5 years in kindergarten. This is my first year in first grade. I have my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education, Pre-K through 6th grade and my Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning! However, I feel that I learn more from my students than I can ever learn in an adult classroom. The kids are the ones who give me the drive to teach, learn, care, love, and commit to teaching! I am also a mom of two boys, 15 and 8, who are in high school and 3rd grade in Spanish Immersion Schools. Outside of work, I enjoy the arts such as live music, art museums, dancing, and going to a play on occasion. I hope to bring my talents and passions into the classroom and will embrace each child’s unique interests as well. I am so excited for this school year and for all the new little faces I get to meet!
I am truly dedicated to each one of the students. We will all learn and grow together. I will secure a safe and respectful classroom community where the kids feel comfortable to share their thoughts and feelings. We will discuss how to treat others and how to voice our opinions. I believe learning comes from a classroom of hands on experiences and social opportunities.
In first grade, we will strengthen math skills, build on phonemic awareness, learn to read, expand writing skills and learn to function in a diverse classroom with care and consideration and through the process of making life long connections. The students will learn how to build on their strengths through a variety of small group and individual academic activities. I plan on incorporating more technology into the classroom, including using the IPADS for deepened learning and the SMART board for group interaction. As an Art's school, I will be integrating all parts of the art's such as dance, drama, art, and music, through the academics as well.
This year is going to be so much fun and I know the students will soar. I also know that I can’t do this job alone. It takes all of you to play a part in your child’s learning. I encourage you to come into the classroom anytime, join in on field trips and/or work with your child at home.
