Dear Colleagues,
As we count down the days until winter break and the holiday season, I wanted to pop in and tell you how grateful I am for your hard work, dedication and professionalism as an employee of Saint Paul Public Schools. No matter what school, department or role you serve, your job is equal parts challenging and rewarding (or not so equal depending on the day). When I say you have the most important job in the world, I really mean it. It is a privilege to serve the students and families of St. Paul, and I appreciate each and every one of you more than you know.
Since returning to SPPS in May of this year, I have gotten to experience so many wonderful events and meet or reconnect with hundreds of amazing people. From greeting students, families and staff on the first day of school to the 25-year staff luncheon to this weekend’s School Choice Fair, I am continually struck by the positive energy and pride that you all have in this district. I’ve worked in many school districts over my career, and SPPS is truly one of a kind.
I am feeling additionally reflective because by the end of this week, we will likely know who your next superintendent will be. We have three exceptional candidates who all know and understand St. Paul and the important decisions and challenges they will need to face head on if they are hired. No matter who the Board selects, I am confident that I will be leaving the superintendent’s office in good hands. I encourage you to take part in the public meetings and interviews happening Dec. 16-18; you can find the full schedule and meeting links in your district email and at spps.org/superintendentsearch.
When we come back from winter break, we will start to work on the preferred candidate’s contract and transition timeline. Between now and then, I hope you have the opportunity to take some time away from work, spend quality time with family and friends, and celebrate the holidays and new year with your loved ones.
Thank you for all you do to make SPPS the best school district in Minnesota. I wish you a wonderful holiday season and a very happy new year.
John Thein, Interim Superintendent
