Parent Academy Special Education

Special Education Parent Academy assists parents with understanding the school and special education systems to be effective advocates for their child's education and make informed decisions.

Lesson 1 Learning Objectives: Individual strengths and goals

  • I can express my child's strengths, goals and needs

  • I know what we will be learning during this program
  • I can identify ways to connect with school staff and community resources to support my child. 
  •  I can envision what a good life would look like for my child at home, school and in the community.

Lesson 2 Learning Objectives: Special Education Process- Evaluation and IEP Basics

  • I can identify ways to connect with school staff and community resources to support my student.

  • I can describe the special education process including interventions, initial evaluation, IEP development, progress reporting, and re-evaluation.

  • I can identify what information is included on each IEP.

  • I can identify questions that I could ask at a conference or IEP team meeting to advocate for my student’s needs.

Lesson 3 Learning Objectives: Positive Discipline and Behavior Supports

  • I can describe the relationship that exists between self esteem and positive discipline with academic achievement.
  • I can identify ways to use positive praise to encourage a growth mindset.
  • I can describe what information an FBA and BIP include.
  • I can identify ways to use positive discipline to address challenging behaviors.

Lesson 4 Learning Objectives: Progress Reporting for Academic Standards

  • I can analyze my student’s report card, test scores, and IEP progress report to determine their strengths, weaknesses and needs.
  • I can describe the accommodations, modifications, and assistive technology that my student needs in order to access the general education classroom and curriculum.

Lesson 5 Learning Objectives: Preparing for Transition to Post-Secondary Options

  • I can analyze post-secondary options to determine what might be a good fit for my student and if my student needs transition services or other support after high school.
  • I can identify what my student needs to work on now in order to prepare for life after high school.
  • I understand what is included on a transition evaluation and transition IEP.
  • I know how to access some community resources that could help support my student after high school.
