SPPS Winter Athletics Update | December 22, 2020
SPPS Winter Athletics Update - December 22, 2020
Following the latest guidance from Governor Tim Walz and the Minnesota State High School League, Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is planning to resume in-person athletics starting Thursday, January 14.
While some districts have opted to start practicing on Monday, January 4, SPPS has selected January 14 to minimize spread of COVID-19 in case of winter break travel or exposures to allow for a 10-day quarantine based on updated SPPS guidance. A start date for competitions has not been determined by the Minnesota State High School League.
Some of the changes that participants will see this winter include:
- Team and practice pod size will be limited to 25 participants
- Competitions are limited to SPPS conference play in basketball, wrestling, and swimming & diving
- There will be no interscholastic scrimmages
- Competitions and practices will be closed to spectators
- There will be no middle school winter sports
SPPS takes the health and safety of our athletes and staff very seriously. Students should stay home and make a report to the SPPS COVID-19 Reporting System if they are sick, have tested positive for COVID-19, or have had close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. They will be notified of next steps and any close contacts will be informed.
SPPS has developed a comprehensive athletics preparedness plan that all teams will follow. While students are in distance learning, voluntary participation in athletics allows them to interact with their peers and coaches while observing social distancing and other safety measures.
