SPPS Athletics Update: May 7, 2021
Following the latest guidance from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) is updating its guidelines for indoor and outdoor athletics.
Effective Friday, May 7, face coverings are not required for student-athletes, coaches, officials or spectators at outdoor practices or competitions. Face coverings are required for spectators at large events with over 500 people. Face coverings are still recommended for outdoor athletics participants who are not actively playing or cannot maintain social distance.
Physical distancing is recommended for participants who are not playing and spectators at outdoor venues. Spectators must stay in a designated area at least 12 feet from the athletes and playing area.
Face coverings are required for all practices and competitions that take place indoors. Participants who are not playing must continue to maintain at least 6 feet of physical distancing. Due to venue limitations, spectators are not allowed for badminton, adapted bowling or adapted softball, with the exception of personal care attendants and caregivers at adapted events.
COVID-19 Testing & Vaccination Resources
Everyone participating in athletics is encouraged to get tested for COVID-19 weekly, prioritizing testing 72 hours before a game.
All Minnesota residents age 16 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Everyone is encouraged to get vaccinated at the first opportunity available to them. Sign up for the Vaccine Connector to be eligible to be randomly selected to schedule an appointment at a community vaccination site.
