Managed Apple ID Changes Coming April 1st, 2023

On April 1st, 2023, a  change to your  SPPS Managed Apple ID (@id.spps.org) is coming.  The current Managed Apple ID which ends in @id.spps.org will be changing to your Google email address ending in @stpaul.k12.mn.us. The new sign in is called a Federated Managed Apple ID.  Federation allows SPPS to better support you if you need assistance with logging into Apple Classroom and other related applications.

This change will also affect how  Apple Classroom is accessed in the future.  Currently, you do not need to log into your iPad using your Managed Apple ID in order to see your classes in Apple Classroom. Those classes show up on your iPad using an EDU profile attached to your assigned iPad.  The EDU profile matches your Apple Classroom data to your assigned iPad.

On August 4, 2023, this EDU profile will be going away and it will become necessary to log into your iPad with your @stpaul.k12.mn.us Apple ID in order to see Apple Classroom class assignments.

Below is more information on what to expect on April 1st, 2023 and beyond.

Account conflict error

  • In the past you may have been instructed to use @stpaul.k2.mn.us to create an Apple ID on apple servers.  This was a label for a personal Apple ID which SPPS does not have control over.  To resolve this issue, navigate to the Apple Support page and follow the directions on How to change your Apple ID to a different email address.  This includes any student who used an SPPS one-to-one iPad prior to Fall 2016 (currently 7th grade and older) as we were using sponsored Apple IDs at that time using @stpaul.k12.mn.us accounts.

  • Resolving the account conflict error can be done prior to April 1st, 2023 and until May 30, 2023..  If you have not taken steps to transfer personal information by Saturday, April 1st, 2023, you will receive an email from Apple with the directions above until the change is made.  You will continue to receive the email until your make the change or until May 31st, 2023.

  • If no action has been taken by May 31st, 2023, the change will be made for you and a new temporary account will be assigned with instructions on how to access your personal information.

  • Apple Classroom will continue to work between April 1st, 2023 and May 31st, 2023 whether you were signed into your iPad April 1st, 2023 as long as there are no account conflicts.

  • If you were not signed into your iPad prior to April 1st, 2023 and there are account conflicts, there are two options 1.  Follow the directions How to change your Apple ID to a different email address.  2.  Do nothing and wait until May 31st, 2023.  If you choose to do nothing, you may not be able to see your Apple Classroom classes until the change is made on your behalf.

  • If you are concerned about data in either account it is always good practice to back up your data periodically.
