Help Us Raise Money for 'Dancing Classrooms'

Dancing

Have you ever seen the movie ‘Mad, Hot Ballroom?’ It is the story of 5th graders in New York City whose lives are transformed by ballroom dance program called Dancing Classrooms. Now Heart of Dance, a local nonprofit can bring the same program to Wellstone 5th graders.

The students will learn the Latin dances Merengue and Rumba, and the ballroom dances Foxtrot, Waltz and Swing. They will also learn some fun line dances. Equally important will be their social learning, as this program emphasizes that dance is a way of making and sharing connections.

Dancing Classrooms was established in the New York City school district over 20 years ago. It has since grown to 30 sites in the US and around the globe and now is in Minnesota. Local nonprofit Heart of Dance sponsors the program and provides trained Teaching Artists and an integrated curriculum interweaving social studies, reading and writing, visual arts, math and of course, music and physical fitness.

The cost per classroom is $2,000.  The money raised will go straight to funding this program for all four of our fifth grade classrooms at Wellstone.  Each class will get a 10 week, 20-lesson residency.

Dancing Classrooms started on February 1, 2016. Our 5th grade students would be so grateful for your help in making their last year at Wellstone one of teamwork, respect and elegance.
