Enrollment Process & Deadlines

The priority deadline for applications for the 2021-22 school year is Friday, March 5. Applying by this date gives you the best opportunity to get into the school of your choice. All kindergarten through 12th grade students living in St. Paul are guaranteed a spot at one of our schools. For Pre-K, certain priorities apply and there may be a wait list for some schools.

Every St. Paul student has a designated community school based on their address. Enter your student’s grade level and home address in the School Finder to find your community school. This tool will also show you all of the schools that serve your area, including regional and district magnet schools, as well as schools outside your transportation boundaries.

Once you’ve narrowed down the options based on your desired school services, transportation needs and other factors that are important to you, you can put two schools on your application, listing your top choice first. It is recommended that families put their community school as one of their two choices. Priority is given to students for their community school, followed by other placement criteria.

NEW! All Pre-K Classes Are Full Day

New for the 2021-22 school year, all Pre-K classes will be full-day. SPPS has 35 Pre-K programs, including Montessori, language immersion, International Baccalaureate and community school programs.

Children who are 4 years old by September 1, 2021, and live in St. Paul are eligible for enrollment in a Pre-K program. Acceptance to Pre-K is based on available space. Priority is given to students who are English Learners; are eligible for free or reduced-price meals; or receive Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) services. For more information, visit spps.org/prek or call the Student Placement Center at 651-632-3760.

Early Notification for Kindergarten

Kindergarten families who want to attend their community school can get early notification of acceptance by applying on or before Friday, January 15. If you miss this deadline, you can still apply by the March 5 priority deadline and list your community school as one of your two choices on your application.

Virtual Open Houses

All schools will be hosting their open houses online this year starting in January. A virtual open house is a perfect opportunity to learn more about schools that interest you. Meet staff and discover the programs, activities and services available to your child. Many schools will also have new video tours that can be watched at any time.

Find the virtual open houses you’re interested in and add them to your calendar so you don’t forget to attend.

Enrollment Workshops

Choosing a school is a big decision, and the enrollment process can be overwhelming. The Student Placement Center will be hosting five virtual enrollment workshops in multiple languages to help walk you through the application process. If you miss the workshops, call or email the Placement Center with your questions at 651-632-3760 or spc@spps.org.

Apply Online

Apply online at spps.org/apply by March 5, 2021, for the best opportunity to get into the school of your choice. An application is required if your child is currently enrolled and requests a different school or if your child is new to Saint Paul Public Schools.
