Week of Sept. 20, 2021

Good Evening E-STEM Families, Staff and Students!

This is Jocelyn Sims, the principal, with this week’s events.

What a great first full week at E-STEM!  Students are starting to learn where their classes are, how to get into their lockers and what table they sit at for lunch each day!  We will continue to support our students to learn all of these routines so that things start to get more smooth every day.

One of the things I keep reminding our students is that choices have consequences, for the positive and for the negative.  We talk about how it is their job to live the 3B's every day: Believing in themselves; Belonging with each other; and Doing their BEST!  They will start to earn their Liveschool Points and be able to purchase awesome opportunities of fun!

Lots of new information to read below!

We have kept the school supply list very minimal this year.  All students are asked to have a zip up binder (trapper keeper like) with a strap.  We are providing students everything else!  Please help ensure your child has a binder and if you are running into any issues, please contact me directly.  Thank you!

FAM Night 6-7PM, Thursday, September 23rd:

Our first Families Attending Monthly (FAM) meeting is this Thursday from 6-7PM at E-STEM.  We will take a little time to learn about mental health supports at E-STEM, provide information on how to navigate Schoology as a parent and then have some fun!  Please bring your E-STEM raptor with you!

Athletics: (Info from SPPS District)

We are excited to be able to offer middle school athletics this fall. As is the case with other school activities, there will be some changes that will allow students to participate in a modified athletics season.

Due to the nationwide shortage of school bus drivers, we are only able to provide after-school transportation for high school students at this time. This means that all SPPS middle school athletics will have a modified intramural season this fall. We wish we could compete against other schools, but we cannot do so without offering transportation. We also cannot ask parents to drive, as it would not be equitable for students who do not have this option.

In light of this change, the fall activity fee is being reduced from $30 to $5. Students will still need a current sports physical to participate in the fall season; please make an appointment with your physician or visit one of our SPPS Health Start Clinics.

The E-STEM season will begin on Monday, September 27th. All activities will follow the COVID-19 recommendations from the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) and the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH). The recommendations include vaccination for anyone age 12 or older, frequent COVID-19 testing, wearing masks when not actively participating, keeping physical distance when possible, and practicing in small groups.

We hope to be able to offer a full season with regular competitions starting this winter. More information will be available later this year. Thank you for your understanding. We are looking forward to a different, but fun, season.

Students will be receiving their new iPads in their social studies classes this week Monday or Tuesday (depending on when they have that class).  In order to receive a new one, they must bring back their old iPad, block and charger cord.

Personal Item Reminders:

Phones, airpods, backpacks, purses all need to be put inside student lockers each and every day.  We are still seeing some of these items on students throughout the day.  Please help remind your child of this expectation.  My goal is not to have to involve parents/caregivers with these sorts of things because I know you have a lot more important things to do!
