February is African American History Month; paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.
One of those people was Dr. Benjamin Elijah Mays, widely known as an inspirational leader in the Civil Rights Movement and passionate advocate of education.
Dr. Mays served in leadership roles at two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) where he increased enrollment for students and salary for professors.
He also served as the unofficial senior advisor and mentor of Martin Luther King Jr.; and gave the eulogy at King's funeral.
More than 10 sites and memorials around the country are named after Dr. Mays including Benjamin E. Mays IB World School.
A famous quote by Dr. Mays is, "It is not a disgrace not to reach for the stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for."
