Board of Education Approves New Contract for Superintendent

The SPPS Board of Education unanimously approved a new three-year contract for Superintendent Dr. Joe Gothard at it's Regular Meeting on Nov. 19, 2019 .
 
The new contract, which covers the period from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023, includes compensation for Dr. Gothard of $240,000 per year, an increase from $232,000 per year. Dr. Gothard did not see an annual adjustment in compensation at any time during his first contract.

"Dr. Gothard has set a strong foundation for our schools, most notably through our strategic plan, SPPS Achieves," says Zuki Ellis, Chair of the Board of Education. "We are pleased with his leadership abilities, public advocacy and nurturing of community partnerships; and we expect Dr. Gothard to continue to make strides to improve equity and close student achievement gaps in our District."
 
The School Board first hired Dr. Gothard in July 2017. He previously served as superintendent in the Burnsville school district and as assistant superintendent, high school principal and middle school principal in Madison, Wis. 
 
He is a member of the National Superintendents Roundtable, and a member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Metropolitan School Districts, which is comprised of more than 40 school districts in the Twin Cities metro area. He serves on the Legislative Committee of the organization. 
 
In addition, Dr. Gothard is the only school superintendent serving on the Greater Twin Cities United Way Board of Directors. He is currently the Co-Chair of Generation Next and has been recently named to the Board of Directors for Genesys Works.
 
Dr. Gothard, his wife and family reside in Saint Paul.
