DeWayne Combs Is a Finalist for Teacher of the Year

"There isn’t any other job or profession for me. I have been put on this Earth to be a teacher." - DeWayne Combs, Teacher of the Year finalist

DeWayne Combs, a physical education teacher at Murray Middle School, has been named one of 10 finalists for Education Minnesota's Teacher of the Year award. A teacher in Saint Paul Public Schools for 29 years, Combs was one of 10 SPPS teachers in the running for the 2020 award, and the only SPPS teacher to advance to the final round.

Combs has taught physical education at Murray Middle School for the past two years. Prior to that, he held various physical education positions at Johnson Senior High, Ramsey Middle School, Battle Creek Middle School and Saint Paul Secondary ALC, where he began his SPPS career in 1991.

Combs says the best part of his job is the kids. "I look forward to each and every day to making a difference in the lives of the learners that I teach. They are a big part of my success as a teacher. The relationships that I have built over the last 29 years continue to this day."

Combs and the other finalists are slated to interview with a selection panel in June. For a full Q&A with Combs, as well as the other SPPS teachers who were nominated this year, visit the Feb. 13 news release.

Congratulations, Mr. Combs, and good luck!
